Satellite Description: The Future of HIV Prevention Clinical Trials
This symposium discusses the future of HIV prevention clinical trials in the context of evolving epidemiology and standards of prevention. It builds on a summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, co-organized in June 2025 by the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute and the Forum for Collaborative Research at the University of California, Berkeley. The summit brought together diverse stakeholders from different regions to discuss pressing issues relating to HIV prevention clinical trial designs across antiretroviral-based pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs), and HIV vaccines. Through a series of presentations and discussions, the symposium aims to highlight and extend the discussion of the challenges and potential solutions for future HIV prevention clinical research. By emphasizing the importance of collaboration and consensus-building among researchers, funders, regulatory agencies, industry, and communities, the symposium deliberates possible pathways for future HIV prevention clinical trials that are ethical, inclusive, feasible, and efficient.
