The Forum for Collaborative HIV Research would like to congratulate Executive Committee Members Cornelius Baker and Michael Horberg, MD on their appointment to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.  Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced their appointment on February 1, 2010.

The Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) provides advice, information, and recommendations to the President through the Secretary of Health and Human Services on domestic and global HIV/AIDS policy issues. PACHA also serves to further the policy goals of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP) and will play an important role in providing input for the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.

Secretary Sebelius stated, “These new members represent the best of America. I look forward to their strategic guidance in assisting HHS to do its part in developing and implementing the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and in supporting the important work of the PEPFAR program.”

Re-energizing the focus of efforts at home and abroad is the goal of EC Member Cornelius Baker who stated, “It is an honor to serve the President and our nation as we work towards an end to the HIV epidemic.  As we approach the 30th year of AIDS, we are now at a critical moment.  I would hope that the Council will be able to provide sound advice to our nation’s leaders that will lead to a re-energized focus to efforts at home and abroad.”

Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Horberg stated, “I am quite eager to do the work of the Council.  HIV prevention, care and research in the US will have a real strategy with the Obama Administration and the Council will help implement the strategy and advise the Administration on HIV-related issues.  I know that the input PACHA gives will be heard and quite helpful.  Groups like the Forum and events like the National Summit are critical at providing important input to the National Strategy and its implementation.”

The Forum applauds Mr. Baker and Dr. Horberg and welcomes their addition to the Council.
