FHI 360 Forum: Women and ARVs for HIV Prevention

NOV-04-11 According to the most recent WHO estimates, women comprise 50% of people globally living with HIV infection. In sub-Saharan Africa, 60% of HIV-positive people are women. Women have been hit hard by the epidemic due to a complex mix of biologic susceptibility‚ social and economic vulnerability‚ and complex behavioral factors. In the past year‚ results from several clinical trials have demonstrated that antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) can be potent tools to reduce HIV transmission. However‚ the same social and economic factors that drive the global epidemic present challenges for bringing ARVs to women most at risk.

This FHI 360 forum - which was held in Washington, DC, on Sept. 29, 2011 and featured experts across a range of areas related to HIV - highlighted both opportunities and challenges for using ARVs to prevent HIV acquisition in women.
